The manual transmission on my Corolla failed after 70,000 miles. While this was well outside of the standard warranty, I thought that a transmission should last a lot longer than that, and I wrote to the GM of the dealership to ask if he could help me with the $3,000 cost. (In that letter I also praised two of his employees who had been very helpful to me then and at other times.)

I received no response to that letter. I sent a second letter via certified mail. That was also ignored. I sent two letters to Toyota - USA in California, who also failed to respond.

Had the dealer sent me a form letter that said that he couldn't help me I wouldn't have been happy, but I would have understood - I really had no claim. But the lack of any response displayed arrogance and a lack of customer appreciation on the dealer's part

There is a bright side to this. I sent another letter to Mr. Watanabe, the president of Toyota in Japan. In due course we reached an agreement in which Toyota reimbursed me for about half of the cost of the new transmission.

In my "thank you" letter to Mr. Watanabe I told him that I would probably buy another Toyota product, but never one from Tri-County Toyota.
