I went in to purchase a 328i. I had just graduated from law school, landed my dream job and wanted to upgrade my 325i. I was hopeful that I would be able to obtain a manual transmission but given their rarity I knew I would have to be patient. Also, the X drive was preferable as it snows where I live (about 3 hours from Reno) After about 6 months of continually looking I left the dealership with an X3. I was very uncertain of this car when I left the lot as it was a much bigger vehicle than I wanted and also because of it's automatic transmission. After having the car for 15 days I contacted the dealership to see what my options were as far as trading it back in. It took a few days to even get a call back. When I would call I would get told multiple excuses and told they would call me back. Finally, they told me it would be very difficult to get me out of the car and basically left it at that, not answering any of my questions as to why it would be difficult. My distaste for the X3 is extreme. Everytime I get in it to drive I want to cry. This vehicle is just not for me. Having been told it was be "difficult" to get me out of the X3 I contacted several dealerships in California. During my trip to California I found that I was "stuck" with the X3 given how inflated the profit was. In fact, by driving the X3 off the lot 14-15 days later I was not in the hole about $6,500. All 3 of the dealerships spent several hours trying to explore my options but all agreed it would be unconsionable for them to make a deal with me as I would be out $6,500.
My advice- drive to California. The service is much better, the prices are CHEAPER, and they actually care about you as a customer as opposed to the sale. Or, if you are ok with getting treated like you are buying a $1,500 car from the corner used car sales man, shop in Reno.

Dealer response on I GOT SWINDLED
Tina has left out most of the story. She came into the store in July looking for a manual 3-series and we didn’t have one. Brian kept in touch with her, eventually calling her to say we took in a car similar to what she wanted. She came in again in early October and test drove an X3. Three weeks later she came back in, test drove the X3 again, and decided to buy it. What Tina has left out is that it was her boyfriend that convinced her to buy the X3. He wanted her to buy the car and she caved to him. Brian actually asked her if she was SURE this was the car she wanted, as she initially wanted a 3-Series. She said she was sure. She traded in a vehicle with negative equity (she also hasn’t mentioned this) and rolled that onto the purchase price. Add in state taxes, fees, a very small down payment, and an extended maintenance plan and not surprisingly she’s upside down on her just-purchased X3. Additionally, her actual purchase price was less than the California dealers advertised “Specials.” She got a good deal, and Brian treated her very respectfully and without pressure. We offered to work with her on a different vehicle, taking the X3 in on trade, but Tina never got back to us. As far as we can tell, Tina just doesn’t want to take responsibility for her decisions, unfortunately.
