I took my 2001 Suburban in on Friday 10/30 for an oil change and because the "low coolant" light had been coming on intermittently for about a week. I had an appointment at 7:30 to leave the car, which I did. It took them 6 hours to call me back with a diagnosis and then they only called because I called them. 8 hours later, they called to say that the heads were cracked and it would be $3800+ to replace them and hopefully that would solve the problem. OR I could have the engine replaced for $7900. I told them no thank you, I would need a second opinion to which she replied well it is an old car with 137,000 miles on it...sorry, still need a second opinion before dropping that kind of money. We picked it up, the coolant level was extremely low (had not been low at all when we took it in). We added coolant and took it to another independent mechanic who pressure tested, and completed all other diagnostics and the only thing wrong he could find was a broken cap on the overflow tank (which is in the same condition as when we took it to Dominion). So for less than $200, my Suburban is fine - Dominion was definitely looking for an uneducated consumer! I will NEVER take a car there again!
