A little about me before I start. I was school trained to work on heavy equipment back in the sixties and had worked on a lot of cars when I was younger so I do most of my work on my vehicles self up till now. With all the computers and tools you need it just is not feasible for me to go this rout now at my age. I never liked shop rates $50.00- $60.00 an hour labor. Hey I don't make that kind of money now or ever for that matter I think it is around $90.00 now, how do you think I can give that much for work I am retired?
I have a list of vehicles I have owned at one time and this list is over 12 years old and not counting motorcycles , semi trucks and boats I have owned over 80 cars and trucks. A true car guy here. So on with my story.
I was surprised maybe I should say overwhelmed at the work and price for work that was done on my truck this year.
Let me explain years ago I had bad experiences with the body shop and I am not kidding really bad experiences I would not have given a penny for every person and paint can in the hole place. I bought a New 1994 Cadillac from the show room floor (where I have bought a Manny cars before) and the drivers door was out of Alignment so like any good dealer they said they would fix the problem, little did I know that was when the problems started. I was given a good car to drive while mine was in the shop. Beckman called me I was told my car was done and could pick up any time. So I go pick up my car the drivers door(the one to be fixed) was still out of alignment but now more. I complained and was given a car to drive while it was being fixed. I am talking 3 to 5 days time to fix the door. to make a long story short this happened 2 or 3 more times the same thing. One time I went to pick it up after they had it for over a week I am thinking maybe 2 weeks I went to pick it up and when I walked out to pick it up I could put my first finger through the top corner of the door all the way to the inside of my car. Now keep in mind this is a new caddy and this has been going on for a month or two. I called the GM hot line and got nothing. No help. Beckman wanted me to take it some place else and have it fixed, No body would touch it they said Beckman just wants to get out of fixing it then leave it to some one else to live with. I ended up trading it for a Buick from Stickman.
Now this is not the only time I had problem with the body shop. I bought a New pick up truck a few years later and the paint was not right on it from the factory. Beckman said they would repaint the bad part. OK well do I need to tell you how many times I took it back to be repainted? Many even to the point of painting the complete truck. I said I was going to file a lemon lawsuit on this one I had been screw two times now from the body shop. Beckman told me he did not want me to do that and said I could go out on the lot and pick any truck I wanted with in the price range I had paid for my new truck. I did.
Some people may say I am crazy for buying cars from Beckman but I liked Chevy's and it was close to home. I stopped doing business with Beckman and bought a few new Pontiacs and oldsmobiles.
As time went on in 2001 I wanted a new 1/2 ton 4X4 so I thought I would check out Beckman store. I ordered a new truck with what I wanted and they found me a truck in Ill and brought to Defiance. I liked the truck and still do. Yes I still have it and it still looks almost as good the day I bought now it has over 130,000 mile on it and still going strong.
Well I had a brake issue with it in March of 2009 and would loose my brakes at a slow speed (under 5 MPH) I had checked with a shop in town that I had used before and thought I was treated fair. I got an estimate of $500.00 to fix the brakes. I was told nothing was going to fall off or cause a wreck and I needed it to go to Georgia. The mechanic said it would be OK and it was. When I was in Georgia I stopped at a Chevy dealer and got an estimate to fix the brakes ( this was a anti lock sensor going bad. not an un co-min problem I have heard) Well $3,000.00 was the estimate I got in Georgia. I knew this was not going to happen here so back home I go. I am thinking $500.00 sounds better than $3000.00. I stopped in Beckmans and was ordering some touch up paint for my truck and just out of curiosity I explained the problem I was having with my truck with the service manager. He knew the problem and said they could fix it. I ask how much? I was told if they had to replace both sensors it would be around $200.00 (two hundred dollars) He explained that not everything needed to be replace like the other places wanted to do. They just clean the rust off the parts and check everything out. I made an appointment to have it fixed and I would wait on it. They said it would take about 2 hours and I was ok with that. Well only one bad sensor and a bill for around $180.00 and my truck was back and running good.
I was very happy with what had happened and said I would do more business with them in the future. I was given a good price and thing were done on time and I am 100% happy with the work and the way I was treated. As far as the Body shop I still will not use it.
