My elderly father took his '97 Escort with < 40K miles on it to Hopkins when the check engine light came on after a bit of rough idle. The tech came back with a diagnosis of dropped valve seat requiring a new cylinder head ($3K+ to R/R). To add insult onto injury, they charged him nearly $100 for this diagnosis & resetting of the check engine light.
My brother & I were suspicious of this diagnosis (suspected they were trying to trick an old man into a new car) so we took it to a local mechanic. This honest guy (Santelli in Glenside) gave the car a complete workover (pressure testing the cyl head) and what he found was the car had 2 broken engine mounts. He inexpensively repaired the broken mounts (missed by Hopkins) and the car is running perfect again.
Shame on Hopkins for trying to cheat an old man.
