Acceleration problems with manual 95 Chevy S10 pickup?

My son's truck has been having problems with accelerating if he tries to accelerate too quickly (it lurches forward and makes a loud noise), if he accelrates slow it doesn't do this. He replaced the spark plugs and the fuel filter but the problem did not stop. Any suggestions of what part or perhaps sensor to replace next? Thanks!
The check engine light is not coming on. Can they still scan for problems if the light is not on?
