2001 Audi A4 Timing belt problem: Broke at 77K miles, new belt fraying at 104K miles. What can I do? Hi! My Audi A4 has been a money pit from day one. At 77K miles, the timing belt broke, causing a cascade of problems (including water pump failure, bent valves, etc) totaling $4,000 in repairs. There's since been a class action lawsuit against Audi (who originally recommended changing the belt at 90K miles but was sued by customers whose belts broke early). Anyway, the new timing belt has about 27K miles on it and the dealer says it is fraying and needs to be replaced. WTF? My spouse and I have contacted the dealer and Audi of America to see if they will replace it free of charge or at least cover some of the cost and they say no. Has anyone else had a similar problem? How can Audi keep putting replacement timing belts on that begin to deteriorate far sooner than they should? Is another lawsuit possible? We've been meticulous about getting all our services done. Would love some input on what we can do. The new belt will be $800 to replace. Thanks!
Actually, I made a slight error up above. For our 2001 A4 Avant, Audi recommended timing belt replacement at 105K miles, not 90K miles as I stated. Even more troubling. |
