Default transmission oil smells bad?

I have a 96 blazer s10, when the transmission oil gets hot the gears last long to change and it smells really bad. The oil level is always going down. I need help, please.

what is "bad"?
does it smell burned? thats a bad sign

rub the fluid between your fingers...any grit or metal shavings? thats bad too
