engine problems, cant figure it out.?

ok, one day, i was getting on my car and all of a sudden it started spitting and sputtering real bad, i could smell raw gas very strong, it would idle fine but when i went to take off it would start acting up again. it is about and 89 305 H.0 in a 80 Camaro Z28, with an electric distributor. i can't figure out if it is the Carb, witch is an Quadrajet. I have had problems with the distributor, and have had to replace it once, and the cap twice, but it never acted like this before. i put about 2-3 gallons of gas in it and it barely drove 5 miles before it ran out of gas, any info of what my problem could be i would very appreciate it, thanks.
