If you break a car contract w/o taking the car can the dealer find you liable

for the whole amount? We went to a dealer and put a deposit on a used car. We said that we wanted the car but were not ready to purchase it until we settled with our insurance company. We understood that our deposit was not refundable but said we didn't want to do any of the "paperwork" until we were ready to purchase however we signed the bill of sale. 5 days later we changed our minds about purchasing the car and informed the dealer. They put on the sales pressure but we still said no. They would not return our money which is fine we are willing to take the loss. Just want to know if they could come after us in the future is they can't sell the car?
