OLYMPIA, Wash. The state Supreme Court says car dealers and other businesses can't pass along their state taxes by tacking overhead charges onto a negotiated purchase price.
The court ruled today that Appleway Volkswagen in Spokane improperly added 79 dollars to the price of Herbert Nelson's used Cabriolet.
The Volkswagen dealer argued it was merely itemizing an overhead expense. The high court says Appleway should not be allowed to inflate the negotiated price by passing its business tax to the consumer.
The court said the dealership would have to cover the tax through the purchase prices.
