I have a 1991 mercury XR2 turbo?

Question is, going down the road holding speed at any given speed it tends to start surging really bad, I give it more gas pedal it straightens out. i just bought the car and it had been sitting up quite awhile. are there any suggestions or answers that i can check into ? Thank you
