car amp question?PRoTECT light?

I got a JBL amp and the red light is on (PROTECT) and the amp wont work. When i start the car the power light goes on for a second then the RED Protect light goes on. i checked the power and ground with a volt meter and it was good, so what does the protect light mean and how do i fix it?
