Default Changing gear to Reverse in honda civic sometimes goes halfway and makes cranking

noise? it goes in halfway thru to reverse gear (in between neutral and Reverse gear, and makes cranking noise when accelerator is pressed.
but when i press clutch and make it right up to end in reverse gear it becomes normal. Its a (95-01) honda Civic petrol.
