2001 jeep grand cherokee (tail light problem)?

During the day my tail lights work fine, but at night or when I turn my head lights on and I apply the brake my tail lights go out except for the top bar on the hatch door. Example... dark outside... lights are working fine... I pull up to a traffic light, I hit the brakes and my tail lights go off? What could this be?
