why is my 93 chevy 1500 slow to start?

I have a 1993 chevy 1500 4 wheel drive w/5.7 liter.When I try to start it the engine turns over for about 5-7 seconds before it starts. once it does fire it runs excellent, no rough idle no hesitation or lack of power.Maybe lazy fuel pump? there is a check engine code # 54, which Ive been told is the EGR valve. Could this cause this?

daaa! ya it can cause it,it can also kill your mileage,find out if its egr valve itself or something related to it,and get it fixed before it leads into something more expensive
