Default I have a 2006 Saturn Ion 3 with auto transmisson. Why is my check engine

light on and trans shifting hard? Just wondering if it could be a transmission problem. The car only has 43,500 mi. I checked the manual and it suggested it could be an emissions problem if the check engine light comes on and stay on, but would the transmission be shifting hard? We have had a lot rain recently. Would that have an effect? Any help is appreciated.
