Default 4WD vs AWD traction comparison?

how does the newer AWD vehicles traction compare to the older 4WD vehicles. Is there wheel spin with the AWD if 1 tire is up and not touching the ground and you stay stuck because of the slippage or does the traction 'seek out' a non spinning tire and provide pull out of a stuck condition.
