Default Automatic and Manual speeds?

Why is it that automatic transmission usually have a lower number of speeds in comparison to a manual transmission? For example, why does the Honda Accord come with a 5 speed manual but a 4 speed automatic as an alternative? Why doesn't the automatic gearbox have 5 speeds?
