Purchasing a used car. Any tips?

I’m really not sure where to start with all of this—so I’m just going to explain my current situation and see if anyone can offer any advice.

I’m in the market for a good used car. I want to get something fairly new with low mileage; as I drive 45 miles one-way to work. I don’t know a whole lot about cars, I’ve only had two and both have been purchased brand new.

What kind of things should I check before purchasing? Also, I’ve read on numerous sites that it’s always a good idea to have a used car looked at by a mechanic that you trust.. Thing is, I don’t know any mechanics! LoL. So should I just find a car I like and take it to any mechanic?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Although they are difficult to find, check out any of the diesel VWs. Mine get at least 40 mpg. There are websites for fans of diesel VWs and most of them have a for-sale list. These cars tend to be well maintained as they are a niche market and nichers tend to be a tad fanatical.
