Your best tool for car shopping is right in front of you. Use the internet to your advantage. After you have decided on a make and model of car you want, go to the manufacturers web site. there will be a section to 'build and price' your car. Go through all the steps. Then, after, you will be prompted to enter an information request, search local inventory - something like that. go ahead and fill that out too.

Within 48 hours, you will be contacted by the internet sales rep for every dealer in you rmarket area. Internet reps can usually cut to the best deal without a lot of hassle - they know that you are shopping multiple dealers, so they have to. Be sure that you are looking at TOTAL prices. Some dealers may have a cheaper car, but charge higher doc fees. So get your best price out the door.

With that done, get your loan set up online as well. Check lendingtree.com, eloan.com, capitalone.com for the best lender resources. If you have edgy credit, go to roadloans.com or drivetime.com. You can get preapproved for the best deal for you.

When you contact the dealer. tell them you have financing arranged. They will offer to meet or beat it. If they can, let them. Then y ou all win. If they cant then you already have the best financing in your pocket.

Lastly, when it comes to extras, the only thing I recommend is gap insurance. if you are in an accident or the car is stolen your insurance will only pay so much. If you owe more than that, you are required to pay the difference. Gap will pay that shortfall so you dont have to. I had a friend who was on the hook for $9k after he totaled his car - so I have been a fan of GAP ever since.

Doing those three things will help you shop smart. An informed customer can make sure that he makes sound decisions, and get the best possible deal

Cheers - good luck!

If you are going to finance. Go and get a copy of your credit report first. Do not let anyone run your credit until you are ready to buy a car. It will lower your score every time someone runs it. They will jack up your interest rate. The best thing to do is get your own financing through e-loan or a bank. Have in mind the car you want and print out from yahoo autos or KBB.com the MSRP and invoice prices of several styles of the car you have in mind. If the dealer does not come close to that price tell him. Then walk out. If he has your cel phone it will be ringing before you get off the lot. Check your figures on the final bill before you sign. They love to make errors and double bill you for things like title and tags. Do not buy any extras except maybe an extended warranty or a clear coat. Don't even need the clear coat if you wax it really good as soon as you get home. Check the numbers again before you sign. I kid you not, they will jack up the price, the interest, anything they can do to maximize their profit. Do not be afraid to walk out. Do not discuss payment amounts. Discuss total costs and interest rates only. If you have a payment in mind they will do everything they can to make it just a little over the amount.
