1998 Ford Ranger 3.0L V6?

I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 3.0L V6 4 wheel drive and the 4 wheel drive is the thing i am having problems with. OK, I start the truck, turn the nob to 4WD LOW and let it sit for roughly 45 seconds, because i herd it could take that long for it to lock in and then i was in a little mud hole and neither one of the front tires spun. The 4WD light comes on and DOES NOT FLASH, and i can hear the shaft lock in, and i was hanging out of the truck looking at the front shaft and the axles to the front tires and they all were spinning but when i gave it some gas the front tires did not spin at all. I was just wondering what could be the problem with it, also this weekend i just replaced the passenger side bearing and axle shaft.
