The 2.0L is the regular Golf.

The 1.8L is the turbocharged engine used in the GTI with 180HP.
The GTI also came with a 2.8L VR6 engine with 200HP.

The 1.8T engine is the most reliable and best performing engine.

They are German cars so they are more expensive to fix than Japanese cars and American cars.

They are average in reliability like Mitsubishi and BMW.

VW's and all other German cars have the same problems. They get electrical problems.
All small problems, but annoying. Such as power windows getting stuck, or light bulbs buring out quicker than usual, or fuses.
Mechanically, it is a good car and like many cars, will last 200,000 miles.

I own an 2000 Audi A4 1.8t (same VW engine). VW / Audi engine with turbo are maintenance nightmare. Even normal parts and labor is unbelievable high.

My timing belt replacement job cost me $1350. On my Honda Civic it only cost me about $450.

The back brake PADS were just $95 - I'm talking parts now.

===
I'm a pretty good mechanic as I've even done a clutch replacement on a FWD. But I normally will not touch my Audi as I can screw it up.

Good Luck...

P.S. On turbo engine they had tendency to create engine sludge and eventually oil starvation then failure. At least take the valve covers off and inspect the valve area. That where the sludge would most likely sit.
