Problem with a used car purchase with Lien record on the vehicle title.?

I bought a use car, 2002 Santafe, last week. During checking a CarFax, I found that there is one lien record on this vehicle. I called the seller, but he told me that a lien is already paid off two month ago. He will send a document to me once he got it from Lien holder who is Hyundai Motor Financial Co..
Since it was kind of long trip, I trusted him. Consequently, I took a car and give him money. I came back to my hometown. During car registration, an agent in DMV told me i can process with this lien, but it will be shown on my future title which I don't want to. I keep calling a seller, but it seems like he doesn't take my call although i'm not sure because it has been a couple of days. I talked to Hyundai Motor Financial Company, but they said they can not tell me whether he paid off or not because i'm still a third party.
Here is my questions. What if he didn't pay off completely? Is there any way i can register this car without showing lien on a title? Thanks
