What would be a good choice for a first car some time in the future (4 years or so)?

So, I think a good choice for a car in the age range in 4 years would be something that's relatively new today. (2006-2007)

What I would like:
-a car that's good on gas (because the prices of gas are so bad, they're only gonna get worse).

-a car that's relatively fast, but fun to drive, too.

-maximum price of $5000-$10000.

-reliable car.

Some things that I was thinking would be the Mitsu Lancer DE/ES model, whatever the middle of the line one is. It's about $17,500 now with all the safety features, and the Subaru Impreza base model.

What I would NOT like:
-an American car. I heard that they break down a lot and are hard to fix. So no Fords.

-a too-fast car (the Mitsu Evo)

-In contrast, no cars that are as slow as tar (Smart Car)

-No older than 3 years old now. When I'm ready that transalates into the oldest car being 7 years.
