car stereos: can a speaker go bad and not play?

my left side speakers won't play, even though i put in new factory radio indash....the wiring "looks" ok, but can a speaker still go bad and not play even though the wiring looks ok?

and yes, ive tried the balance/fade buttons....thanks guys...
