Default Mazda6 2.3L 4cyl or 3.0 V6?

I'm a college student wondering if it would be better to get the 2.3L 4cyl Mazda6 or the 3.0V6. I currently have a 1.6L Mazda Protege. I'll be doing a lot of highway miles between NY and NC where I'll be going to school. I want a more powerful car, because the Protege just doesn't have the power for long highway trips. People are telling me the 2.3 will be adequate and a huge difference over the car I'm driving now. It is cheaper and gets better gas mileage than the V6. What are your thoughts? Thanks
