Default Why does my Mercedes sometimes lag/sputter on initial acceleration?

I have a 1992 190E 2.6 with the automatic. Occasionally, when I hit the gas after slowing down or taking off from a full stop the car will sputter or just lag before it responds to my pressing down on the gas. It does this randomly, when the car is cold or hot; day and night, it makes no difference. The only constant thing is that it is after I am at a full stop or just recently braked that it does this. What could this be? My guess is it may be the fuel filter or maybe the fuel pump but I see no trouble out of either of those things at any other time I am driving and know either can wreak havoc on normal driving if they are faltering. What might this be?
