2002 chevy cavalier fuel gauge?

if i forget to keep track of mileage i will run out of fuel even though my gauge says it it is full decided to have the car diagnosed at gm s customer service request and what i already knew i was told gauge sensor not functioning, gm said it was due to the age of the vehicle and mileage that is what chevy dealer said, after asking the dealer why he said this he claims that he did not say this and that it is not a very comon thing however there was no way of knowing if it is a defect , i since did some research and seen that there are a number of complaints and the Canadian cavalier has a recall any suggestion how i could pursue this with gm
