Scion xB 2006 -why don't things work in the cigarette lighter?

I know the lighter works because when I push it in, it pops out a few seconds later lit up and hot.
When I try to charge my GPS or cell phone, it doesn't work. Any ideas before I bring it to the Toyota dealer?
