i have a lincoln LS 2002 and the AC sometimes quits on me and hot air comes out?

i'm just driving down the road, it dies and lots of hot air comes out and no matter how much i adjust the heating controls to cooling hot air comes out!!! and when i turn off the system a little hot air still comes out..why???? thanks guys
