Default What is a good, reliable and cheap first car for a 20 year-old?

Just passed my test about a month ago and like most people, I want a car nowwww!!

Basically what is a good starter car?? And are Autotrader/eBay motors/etc a good way of buying one?

I am only 20 so insurance isn't great but, I think it may be a little better than 17 -year olds'. Obviously a car with a smaller engine will help this, but I'm not sure to what extent this will help?!

I am a student so cheap is gooood!

I've looked at moneysupermarket for an insurance quote on some cheap bangers and its still coming out at about £1000-£1200? But with newer cars, it seems to be only a fraction more expensive? So I'm a bit confused?? Also, as I've only passed for a month, after how long does it get cheaper regardless of age? Is it worth waiting a year, will this make a difference?

I also plan to do Pass Plus which can supposedly save up to 30% with some companies -- anyone managed anything like that??

Many thanks for feedback!

i have an 02 reg renault clio and its brilliant. My insurance is pretty low, it cost me 4,500, and I get 52.6mpg (thats 600 miles on a full tank.) Its a 1.5 engine, so it moves too!

Whatever you do, get a diesel. I know the fuel costs a bit more, but i get double the mpg than my boyfriend, and he has a 1.6 ford focus. Plus the tax is less on a diesel too (mine is £82 per year) although the initial cost of a diesel is more than the petrol equivelent
