I'm a union ironworker and i need an american car that gets 28-40 mpg. What options

do i have? Besides Geo's. I've looked for Geo and Chevy Metro's and they are hard to come by. My budget is $1,200.00! I know it's not a lot, but I already have 2 vehicles. I was hoping to find an older (pre 1994) Metro, but I haven't had any luck. I would like to know if anyone knows of another type of vehicle that gets over 30MPG's. HELP ME!
