Default Can't afford car payment anymore, anything we can do?

We bought a new 2008 Chevy In April of last year, so we have had the car a little over a full year now. At that time my husband was making about 600.00 a week, and I was working part time at a B&B. So we had no problem affording the almost 500.00 payment every month. But now, my husband has lost his job, and so have I, and he is on unemployment. Between rent and other essential bills, we are struggling to pay the car payment. And I am about 5 months pregnant now. Is there anything we can do to get rid of this car without it ruining our credit? I've asked the finance company and they told us to file bankruptcy, or let the car get reprocessed. But both options would be detrimental to our credit. Any suggestions? BTW, we are current on all our payments.
