1998 jetta wolfsburg 2.0 auto a/c question?

i replaced the a/c compressor and expansion valve with vw parts. after evacuating and recharging with correct amount of freon the unit would not get cold. just cool. the expansion valve appeared to be opening and closing but the high side was acting like there was restriction. i recovered the freon and blew out the lines and blew through
the drier then evacuated and recharged again. same results. i was afraid i would damage the compressor so i didn't use the a/c for 2 weeks. my daughter used the car after that 2 weeks and turned on the a/c and now it is cold cold cold. what do you think happened??? crazy!
