Default Chevy big block starter wiring question?

I have a 72 Chevelle, when I got it, it had a 305 small block with HEI ignition. I put in a 454 with a points distributor, and am currently working on the wiring. I already got the two starter wires connected, the yellow going to the coil from the R terminal, and the purple one going to the ignition switch from the S terminal, but there is another red wire, its spliced in with the B+ wire for the alternator. It was connected to the starter when it had the HEI, I was just wondering if I need that wire, and if so, would it hook up to the R side? I think I remember reading something where that is only used to make sure the coil for HEI gets a full 12 volts when cranking.
