is it legal to drive a car that is not registered under your name?

.. is it legal to drive an automobile if my parent's has insurance in the car but doesn't have my name on it?
i'm sorry if this is a stupid question but i just don't know.. they won't let me drive my own friggin car that they bought for me because the car's not registered under my name.. but my friend told me that it's fine to drive the car as long as your parent's names are in the insurance

most insurance ocmpanies will insist that one of the cars at your residence be insured for you, regardless of the registration, this doesn't matter at all, as long as it is legally registered to someone. but you still need insurance, in most states.
