Default VW Golf Match 2003 Alarm Sounds on Ignition / Car won't start!?

I have recently returned from a 4 week trip abroad. The car has just gone through freezing weather and now when I put in my key and try to start the car it seems like the battery is dead and the alarm goes off. What is wrong with it? Is the battery dead and can I jump start it? Also I cant seem to find the positive and negative for the jump start on the battery. It is a VolksWagen Golf MK IV 2003 Match.
