A locksmith can't help you. Those keys are laser cut and you have to get them from the factory. Go to the parts department at your Audi dealer with the V.I.N. ( the 17 numbers at the lower left of your windshield) and they will order them for you. They will have to program the codes for you so the keys will communicate with your car. Be sure to get 2 keys so you never have to go through this again. A '97 A4 is a great car!!

take your vin number to any Audi dealership. If they are like GM, Ford or Chrysler, they only use about 35 keys for ALL of their vehicles. I would think that if this is true, the key code should be in the vin number, since everything else is. The vin number tells the exact date of manufacture, the assembly plant, car color, and what engine it origionally had. These are just a few things in that 14 digit code.

Otherwise, you may have to call a locksmith and have your ignition switch and door/trunk locks changed out.....OUCH!!!

good luck
