My family has been in need of a new car since November when a tree fell on ours. We have been trying to wait to buy until we could afford a better car that would last us many years. We tried to purchase a new vehicle today and ended up having a really terrible experience. We went into Auffenberg Mazda in O'Fallon, IL because they were supposedly having a really great sale on used cars---we ended up only being able to look at new cars because there were no actual great deals to be had on used cars.
We found a car that was reasonably priced and haggled $1000 dollars off the invoice-very reasonable for both parties. They offered us $1675 trade for our vehicle-also very reasonable for both parties-because our vehicle is quite older. We signed the paperwork and put our son and things in the new car. When we signed the paperwork, they stapled it closed and that seemed very odd to me. When we got outside I opened the paperwork and started scrutinizing it. Come to find out, they had marked up the sale price $2412, so not only were we not getting anything for our trade but we also weren't getting the car for the $1000 off that was agreed upon.
When I went back inside to talk to them about this, they said they couldn't give us the car at the price we agreed upon and that this was as low as they could go-take it or leave it. We decided to take it anyway and went outside to leave but I told them we would reflect our dissatisfaction in our upcoming customer survey from Auffenberg and Mazda.
The Mazda manager came outside with the keys to my car and told us not to take the deal if we weren't completely comfortable. I said we had already loaded our things and our son and we would take the car but again that I would fill out the survey dissatisfactorily. He then said he would not sell us the car and we had to take our keys back and leave. He took the paperwork from my hand, went back inside and got our down payment check, stuck it in my hand and said for us to take our money and our car and go. He said he absolutely would not do business with us. He also said(trying to make a personal dig at us as if he hadn't been rude enough already) that he wasn't sure the paperwork would go through on the loan anyway. Well, HELLO, we wouldn't have been leaving with the car if the paperwork hadn't already been approved.
I can't believe after them trying to take advantage of us and us calling them on it that they would then have the nerve to treat us like vagrants!!! I don't condone them taking advantage of anyone in this fashion but let's face it...some folks don't have to haggle or look at the bottom line price and they don't care if they didn't get what was promised for their trade in or that the car would cost more than what it was supposed to. But people like us can't afford to not look over every dollar on the contract and can't afford to have an extra $2000+ tacked on at the end. And then for the MANAGER to come out and tell us he didn't want our business and for us to leave is dispicable. I wouldn't treat a criminal as rudely or disrespectfully as he treated us.
