Good or Bad.
I saw this beautiful Mini-van on Cars.com. Very nicely priced. Even though we come from afar, we decided to make the trip as my wife desperately needed a new big car.
We get to the dealership and the Van is trashed. Horrible, inside and outside. You really can't understand how selling a car in these conditions isn't illegal (we should have known better at this point). Specially family vehicles. They kept repeating the phrase.. " It's a nice car ". I usually like to take the car for a small test drive on a highway. We didn't even get 2 blocks from the dealership when I just said no. It was THAT bad. Next, we ask if there is anything else in the price range. They show us next another Minivan.. $2000 dollars more expensive and less equipped. But my wife loved it. We drove it and (of course) after driving such a peace of junk, this one felt AWESOME. We were very pleased although the price seemed a little high. I asked the sales guy and he said there wasn't much he could do for me.
Being fair, he did lower the price about 200 bucks, when I said (honestly) we didn't have what he was asking for. Anyway, we said.. ok.. we've traveled this far. Now, I was VERY straightforward with the guy. This Van is for my wife and kids and need something reliable and safe. Is there anything major that the Van needs repaired?. the Guy says no, then he shows this bill of sale that specifies the vehicle is sold as is but gives us an option to buy an extended warranty if any problems come up after we've bought the vehicle I was a bit relieved. (but giving it a bit of thought this doesn't sound like really honest, does it?).
Long story short, the CHECK ENGINE light comes up the following day, I decide to bring the Van to the manufacturer dealership and SURPRISE..!!! it needs a new engine and a few other parts including battery, strauts, etc, etc.. that amount to almost $8000.00
Nice for a car I just bought.!! I contact the owner of the dealership to find out there is no way he'll take the car back or fix it, and he continues to tell me how the manufacturer dealerships are trained to sell you stuff you don't need. So I take it to another mechanic, a small one.. that verifies exactly what the manufacturer dealership had diagnosed at a insignificant lesser cost. Now, the owner says he'll pay half of the extended warranty to help with the repairs and I don't know why, I don't feel that comforted by his words anymore, so I check the warranty company online. This company has a TON of law suites and thousands of bad reviews.
Basically saying it should be illegal as well. and in one state it's being sued by the government. So basically I just request half of what he's supposed to pay in exchange for releasing the title because I owed about that amount still to the dealership. He agreed.
THANK GOD, the vehicle was still under manufacturer warranty and they replaced the engine for FREE. ($100 deductible). And I had to absorb $2000 dollars in repairs to my BRAND NEW USED and ultra SAFE Mini-van.
My recommendation. DON'T ever buy a car without taking it to a mechanic first and don't ever buy a car from this dealership.
I've been ripped off several times in my life and you get angry.. but then you just move on. In this case, I felt I had the obligation to at least try to warn and inform people about my experience, because we're talking about people's lifes here.
Really, what would have happened if my wife was driving alone with my kids and something had gone wrong with the Van? I don't even want to think about it. But when I asked if the Van was ok, they didn't even hesitated. They said .. IT'S GREAT.
