Good or Bad.
After a bad buying experience with the Tustin GMC dealer (look under the "sales experience blog"), we decided to try them for service, as they are close to the house. This event involves a GMC Fiero, a little 2 seater car built in 1986 that they have maintained before (expensively...). My daughter used to drive this car, a few years ago, and it's been with us ever since. We now have a 17 year old that needs a car, so I decided to get the car checked, fixed where necessary, and back on the road. I took the car to Tustin GMC, and handed it over. They charged me $89 for a "check" - which is fine - but didn't give me ANY paperwork once this check was done, just a verbal "the brakes are bad, and the brake intensifier is bad, and the brake pads need replacing and the rotors are cracked. It'll also need a tune and a few other things need doing, your total bill will be $3500 from our current estimate" - and you know what that means with the average car dealership: expect a $4500 bill to get things fixed (the car isn't worth that much...). In the end, I managed to get a piece of paper out of them with a badly barely readable hand-written list of problems. I have it sitting on my desk on my "to do" list. We asked them for the service history for the car, and although they did find that the car had been there 3 or 4 times in the past when it came to the service history "they couldn't find it".... so much for computers, what a surprise. At a guess, it's probably on the same computer where they keep their new car inventory information. They explained that the work was major - 4 new rotors, brake pads, the brake booster by itself is a $350 item sir (since found it at the Fiero store and just about everywhere else for about $120-150...).
Although I was tempted to just let them get on with it, as I have too little spare time to be able to do anything much else, something was nagging at the back of my mind, and when I got home having decided NOT to pay the money and get it fixed, my wife said that she seemed to remember having the brakes done shortly before we stopped using the car. She was right, the brakes were fixed BY THIS SAME GMC DEALERSHIP. This weekend I finally got around to taking the car to Sears and asking them to check the brakes and do a few other little things that needed doing. They just called to say that the brakes were brand new, and that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the brakes, the rotors, or the brake system. They checked the brake fluid, and it was all perfectly OK. What does that tell me? Well - we will not be buying our next car from them (and we're looking), we will not be using them for service. I most strongly suggest NOT using these people, as they were very clearly on the take. They were fully intending to charge me money for something major that did NOT need doing. They really intended to sped about $200 on parts & have the car for a few days so that they could give me a 3,500 dollar bill. Stunning. Do you want to buy a car from these people and have them take care of the maintenance ?????

Comment on dishonest service galore
The transients are creating a mess on private property, Akers said. They leave garbage and excrement around makeshift campsites. A deeper fear for police is squatters’ campfires, which could potentially start an uncontrollable blaze. The captain said he believes five or six campers — both men and women — are involved.----------------JimnaeUsed Cars
Another sale lost.
My wife decided that she wanted to buy a GMC Yukon XL, with everything on it, and of course a specific color. We went to this dealership, and when we managed to attract someone's attention explained what it is that we were after. The guy had no idea what they had there, couldn't tell me anything about the Yukon's features, couldn't ask questions that I had about the car, didn't care to find out about it, and just told us that he didn't know but would find us a brochure. He apparently didn't have anyway to look up what they had, so took us around the back, walking about 20-30 yards ahead of us, clearly not caring one iota about his clients who had $50k or so ready to spend, scurrying around piles of cars from one to the next in the blazing heat trying to sell us what he happened to find. He had NO IDEA what was there, and walked past the car that we were after without even seeing it, still just running around well ahead of us, no intention of being civil at all. I saw the car, diverted to have a look at it, called over to him, and when he finally turned up he (of course) didn't have a key, couldn't get it out very easily, wasn't too keen to put in the effort and get it out for us, it was clearly all very inconvenient for him. What a 100% prize moron that character turns out to be - the kind of guy who, as an employer, you'd be DELIGHTED to fire. Not very surprisingly, I'm sure, we decided that we didn't want to buy from that particular muppet, so walked out of the dealership & went to Costa Mesa's GMC dealer (Nader's) where we asked for someone knowledgeable and found someone immediately. The guy answered ALL my questions, had info on his PDA where he didn't have an immediately answer, and make a call on one particular question that I had to make sure he got the RIGHT answer for me. They had a list of what was in stock, drove us over to their storage location where the car was, we test drove it, loved it, handed over the money & left with a car. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!! For the rest of the story about Tustin GMC, do yourself a favor and read the next event on the "service" blog that I'm about to write. This happened about 10 weeks ago, with the follow up today... amazing, what an outfit. May they go bust in a nasty way! Do NOT buy from that gang (yes, I used the word GANG), buy a bicycle instead if you have to. These people are an incompetent bunch of liars.
